EAST University Benchmarks ODeL Best Practices at the Open University of Kenya

On March 9th, a delegation from EAST University, led by the Vice Chancellor, visited the Open University of Kenya (OUK) as part of a strategic engagement aimed at exploring opportunities for collaboration in the advancement of Open, Distance and eLearning (ODeL). The team, drawn from the ODeL unit, the Academic Department, and the Information Technology (IT) Department, represented the University’s commitment to building strong partnerships that support innovation and growth in digital education.

The visit provided a platform for constructive dialogue between the two institutions on shared priorities in the evolving higher education landscape, particularly in the delivery of flexible and technology-driven learning. Discussions centered on areas of mutual interest such as digital content development, Learning Management System (LMS) infrastructure, student engagement in virtual environments, and frameworks that support quality assurance in online education. The engagement emphasized the importance of collaboration in addressing common challenges and leveraging collective expertise to enhance the accessibility and effectiveness of ODeL programs.

In addition to exploring avenues for partnership, the EAST University delegation gained valuable insights into practical approaches that can inform ongoing improvements within its own systems. Interactive sessions and demonstrations highlighted opportunities for strengthening digital learning environments, enhancing student support mechanisms, and promoting data-informed decision-making in academic delivery.

This benchmarking visit underscores EAST University’s broader vision of positioning itself within a network of forward-looking institutions that are shaping the future of education through collaboration and innovation. By fostering relationships with institutions such as the Open University of Kenya, the University aims to create pathways for knowledge exchange, joint initiatives, and continuous improvement in the delivery of high-quality, flexible learning experiences.

EAST University remains committed to expanding its ODeL capabilities while actively seeking partnerships that will enrich its academic offerings and better serve its diverse student community. The University extends its appreciation to the Open University of Kenya for the engagement and looks forward to the potential collaborations that may emerge from this interaction.
